Ahh this is good stuff, our very own National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) has a mapping system for geographic information. The Geographical Information System produces maps that when retrieved and manipulated can enable one to have a “birds eye view” of natural resources and agricultural practices or crops grown in different parts of the country. You can read more on their site but this is a fantastic way for providing information for investors and planning.

The databases are separated into Resource Information, Agriculture Systems and Farming Systems. So all up they provide information such as:

  • Defining of agro-ecological zones
  • Identifying areas suitable for crop production
  • Identifying areas where certain food crops are grown
  • Estimate crop production and area under production of certain food crops
  • Identifying areas where certain sources of income are dominant
  • Identifying the ease of access to essential government services of villages in rural areas

So with information like the above available, I wonder if we could cross reference it with information on the availability of telecommunications, electrification services, banking services and transport? Then we’d really be in business!
