By Just got on the net this morning and was wondering how I could somehow get a rough idea of how many .pg domain’s are out there on the web. So I did a little experiment on Google. I typed in ‘com.pg, gov.pg‘ and I got 11,100 listings. To make a comparison with another pacific island country, I tried ‘com.fj, gov.fj‘ and I got 3,800 listings. Now I know that this is not a very accurate way of measuring how many websites are out there because Google is also counting email addresses. But I thought it was interesting nevertheless.
Then while I was looking at the above results I stumbled on a site called MiniRank, which listed the most popular websites in a given country. Again I’m not familiar with how their ranking works, but from the site they said that only web links were counted on the web and not the amount of hits to the site. They claim that all countries miniRank ranks are checked thoroughly and if a given website isn’t in the corresponding index, chances are that either the website is fairly new, or it’s spam related. They added that the ranking is automatic and nobody can pay for a higher score. This alone separated the project from all other ‘pay for sponsored placement’ websites. Keep in mind that the list below lists website links and not hits.

Well again, judging from the way they rank it, I am surprised fijitimes.fj is also way down the list…and if I were to put an ad for Fiji customers, I wouldnt put it on webmasters.fj, I would put it on fijitimes.fj because everyone in this country goes there…

Thanks D, yeah it is all very interesting especially from an online advertising point of view. But obviously I’d look at more rankings before I trusted just this one alone. But as an indicator of what’s on the net I guess it’s a good guide.
On another issue, it makes me wonder about things like whether the number of registered businesses in a country have an effect on the number of emails on the net and hence what we can see in the google listings?
Because if that is the case then high internet prices in PNG have clearly not hindered email and website listings on the net or another way to look at it is imagine how many more businesses and individuals could be listed on google if internet prices in PNG did drop?

Hi Emmanuel, yes that’s worth exploring…I am sure there is increasing awareness among individuals and businesses in PNG and rest of Pacific on how they can use Internet to their advantage…with Digicel in the house (a spectre for Pac telcos no doubt:)), Internet prices will surely drop and by the time it does, Pacific Internet users would have matured…that is a process that will take care of itself I guess. What we probably need now is put systems in place that would facilitate this maturing process…eg: Pacific company registries should really start to explore opportunities of online presence…I am sure their database would be very useful in many ways. Or out of interest, someone else could do it./..

Good question, unfortunately we didn’t even make the cut?! So something must be definitely wrong with the ranking!!!
But on a serious note, our company website does not get that many hits so I’m not surprised. For example, a Google search on ‘www.masalai.net’ only brings up 265 listings. And as for the blog, well it doesn’t have a .pg extension so it wouldn’t count as a PNG website.
