I know this isn’t PNG-related, but check out this keyboard performance by Qi Zhang. Amazing!

Shows what a good performer can do with a modern keyboard. The instrument she is playing is the Electone Stagea from Yamaha. I want one of these! (and he skill to play it like this)

No worries Peter, its music related…so that’s cool. Thanks for sharing, amazing dexterity on her part. Do you play an instrument yourself?

I have an interest in traditional PNG music from before western influences. I know there were some good recordings made music researchers in the 50’s – 70’s and should be in the music archive at NBC, but many have deteriorated and are not accessible. Some more can be found at ANU, The Smithsonian, and the New Guinea Collection at UPNG – but these are not easily accessible and are not on-line.
Anyone know of a good source for traditional PNG music? Whatever there is should be collected, documented, preserved and made available.
I know some musicians have been recently recording PNG trad music – see David Bridie’s Succumb. He is planning to release a CD of Simbu flute music and womens songs on Club Mu but has not been able to do so yet.
My Mana and her tambus used to sing me traditional songs (Turnim Lek ceremonies etc.) but she is in her 70’s and I am afraid the memories will die out.
So does anyone know a good source of traditional PNG music? Sounds like a good research project.

MELBOURNE, you are being called to immerse yourself in the driving rhythms of the best the world has to offer.
The Australasian World Music Expo would infuse the city streets with African hip hop, Melanesian folk and bass heavy beats for three days of non-stop culture and music, expo producer Russell Field said.
“It gives the artists the chance to both perform and launch themselves internationally,” he said.
Melbourne will host 350 local and international music industry delegates who will advise and size up the 50 musical outfits from Australia, Papua New Guinea, South Korea, Mali, the UK, New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and India during the expo.
Included in the line-up is the Public Opinion Afro Orchestra of up to 20 musicians.
“It’s important for Africans to know their music is being heard here in Australia,” Public Opinion singer Fem Belling said.
Also appearing on the bill is Ronny Kareni of West Papuan band Tabura.
The music expo starts on November 19 at the Hi-Fi Bar, Swanston St.
