“Cannibal Tours” by Dennis O’Rourke
PNG Film Screening Series – SCREENING PART THREE
THURSDAY 6TH AUGUST 2009, 6:00PM
Main Lecture Theatre, UPNG, Waigani Campus
Featuring Q&A with special guest: Dr Nicholas Garnier, Visual Anthropologist, UPNG
While it borrows heavily from ethnographic modes of representation, the film is a biting commentary on the nature of modernity..The film follows a number of ecotourists as they travel throughout the Sepik River area in Papua New Guinea, bargaining for local crafts, paying to view formerly sacred ceremonies and photographing of every aspect of “primitive” life. The tourists unwittingly reveal an unattractive and pervasive ethnocentrism and thus become somewhat dehumanized by the camera.
