Digicel Releases the Facebook Phone

With the number of PNG registered facebook users currently hovering at just over 65,000, facebook is set to become more entrenched in our daily lives. At Masalai we have already developed a social media management service for our larger clients and we’ve promoted facebook to many smaller clients as well.

Even politicians like Sam Basil have opened up their own Pages to keep in touch with the public, so one gets the feeling the elections will be hectic for both candidates and the public (especially through facebook groups like Sharp Talk and PNG Politics).

But ultimately the driving force will still be the general population. So just to help nudge the facebook revolution along a little bit, Digicel PNG have brought in the newly released facebook phone.

Made by Alcatel, this isn’t an Android phone or even a smartphone,  just a feature phone with some dedicated Facebook talents most likely aimed at the budget-conscious consumer. We picked this one up from Digicel for K140.00

Clad in a QWERTY slate form factor, the 555 Blue has a non-touchscreen 2.4-inch display (320 x 240 resolution) and a four-row QWERTY keyboard right under it, with the dedicated Facebook key sitting right on the bottom row.  Details include a 2.0 megapixel camera module, a 200MHz MediaTek processor, dual-band EDGE connectivity (no WiFi and no 3G), Bluetooth 2.1, an FM radio, a 3.5mm audio jack, a 1,000 mAh battery and microSD card support.

We don’t have exact details about the extent of the Facebook integration, but it seems to have been designed around the facebook social network. Aside from the Facebook integration, software features includes an IM client, an email client (POP3 and IMAP), a music player and the Opera Mini browser.

We’ll be watching the facebook numbers to see if this phone will increase the PNG facebook population. But again a thumbs up to Digicel for recognising a need in the mobile market of PNG.

  1. 65,000 Papua New Guinean’s on facebook? Wow! But have you noticed that Papua New Guinean’s on facebook are still denied FACEBOOK NOTIFICATIONS VIA SMS.. Because Papua New Guinea (our country) isn’t registered. Only Blackberry’s and/or iphone’s (using WiFi or 2G/3G) can receive notifications via sms but we (using phone’s like Alcatel, Nokia, LG, etc).. can’t, now why is that?
If Digicel could do something about that, we’d really appreciate it.
    thanks 🙂
