Paul Spargo wins The South Pacific Export Papua New Guinea Open 2012

Masalai Communications in conjunction with Old Plantation were the official online sponsors for the weekend’s South Pacific Export PNG Open 2012.

Our sponsorship comprised of a website, facebook page, twitter page and management of the Leader Board. The Leader Board was essentially progressive updates of the Tournaments scores going onto the website and on the flat screens setup throughout the Port Moresby Golf Club.

This is our second year with our sponsorship and one which we believe has allot of potential for us to explore digital solutions for real time scoring for events. Maybe next year we will look into expanding the scoring system to a customised solution on a tablet of some sort.

But in regards to how it went? Well visit the website…oh and a last thank you to Media Partners and IImagination Consultants for their help.

Paul Spargo wins The South Pacific Export Papua New Guinea Open 2012. Spargo started the final day in 8th position 5 behind the leader Brett Rankin who had an up and down day on the course. He did not start well and dropped 2 shots with Pieter Zwart going 1 under and equaling Rankin at 8 under. Holes 7, 8 and 9 saw Rankin hit 3 birdies in a row to once again head the field after 9 holes by 2 shots. Previous Open champion Michael J Wright did not have a good day and dropped to many shots to stay with the leaders. Spargo shown the field his strengths, held his nerve and shot a 4 under 68 on the day finishing with a 9 under for the tournament.

The wind picked up and was swirling on the back 9 which really tested the golfers mental ability to be able to play the course with some extra obstruction. Spargo held out and went into the final hole 1 ahead of the field and only needed a good shot to take the Green jacket. His shot was just short of the pin position and he managed to finish his round with a par.

Overnight leader Brett Rankin and Ian J Esson were joint runners up with a magnificent 8 under par for the tournament and were just unlucky on the day that Spargo found form at the right time.

GM DP Brewery Mr stan Joyce presented the trophy and green Jacket to Rankin in front of a crowd that was well down on last year’s 3000 enjoying the moment.

In the Amateur competition The overall Champion was Soti Dinki with a score of 293 for the 4 days. Sophie Cragnalini took the ladies competition by a whopping 29 shots from her nearest rivalhitting 317 over the tournament.

  1. Its a shame this event wasnt managed as well as it was last year. The 2011 open was a fantastic few days of golf and spectating but this years event seems to have been terribly mismanaged.

Most of the tents that were the life of the party last year were not present this year. I have heard various reasons why this was so. Some blamed Sp beer the main sponsor for squeezing other tents out, others blamed it on poor management by the event organisers Media partners (who couldnt even organise a leaderboard for the spectators who were there) while others blamed the port moresby golf club itself for not being a very welcoming club and having no real desire to spread interest in the event or the sport.

Whoevers fault it was I hope they take note of the poor crowd attendance and lack of atmosphere and rectify it for the next open so that 2013 is an enjoyable success like this year was not.
