Pico-Hydro Training Course

ATprojects, with support from the World Bank funded Sustainable Energy Financing Project, is running a technical training course for pico-hydro (<5kW) system design and installation.

The objective of the 2 week course is for attendees to develop the skills required to assess, design and construct a pico-hydro system.

The topics covered in the course will include: hydro power theory and electricity fundamentals; measurement devices and techniques; water turbines; types, construction and control; hydro-electric schemes; design issues; hydrological investigations; construction aspects; electrical aspects; support services to operators; and non technical aspects such as management, environmental and social issues etc.

The course will include a strong practical component including: using the onsite pico-hydro unit as a case study for examination; surveying nearby streams for head a flow characteristics; and preparing a brief pre-feasibility report listing the key design criteria and features for developing a pico-hydro system on the surveyed stream.

Attendees are expected to have some technical knowledge and understanding of power generation and electricity basics. Assessment will consist of an exam (50%) and marking of the pre-feasibility report (50%). All students will receive an attendance certificate and students that pass will be awarded a certificate of completion.

The course will be delivered by Peter Lynch of Pelena Energy Australia. Peter has almost 20 years experience working in the hydro industry both in Australia, PNG and the Solomon Islands, where he has developed many-community owned and operated micro-hydro systems. The course has been developed specifically for the PNG context.

Where: ATprojects Centre, located about 30 minutes drive outside of Goroka
When: 19 October to 30 October
Cost: K2,200 (Cost includes accommodation and all meals at the ATprojects Centre. Cost for attendees who arrange their own accommodation will be K1,500)
