Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: The U.S. Embassy is pleased to see off Esther Sibona, the 2013 Fulbright Scholarship Program recipient who will attend the University of DePaul in Chicago to earn a Master’s degree in Journalism.

Esther is from Nubia Village, Bogia in the Madang province. Selected in October 2012, she impressed the Fulbright Committee during the finalist interview process with her charisma and potential for lasting impact through her community communications project. “I’m honored to receive the 2013 Fulbright Scholarship and look forward to my studies in the United States!” said Esther.

Esther graduated from Divine Word University in 2007 and has been working in media and communication for five years in various organizations including Newcrest Mining Limited-Lihir.

When she returns to Papua New Guinea, her goal is to use radio broadcasting to promote health messages.  “I believe this opportunity will give me the platform to develop my passion, as well as develop me professionally,” explained Esther.  She hopes to contribute to PNG’s development by creating education awareness around cross cutting issues that affect Papua New Guineans.

The Fulbright Scholarship is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” Fulbright Scholars are chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential, and they have the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. The program is sponsored by the U.S Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs.
