MiCash mobile payment system being introduced to Gerehu Market

I am writing on behalf of UN Women and the National Capital District Commission’s (NCDC) Safe Cities for Women and Girls’ global programme to kindly request your attendance at Gerehu Marketplace this week where we will, alongside Nationwide Microbank, be incorporating mobile banking into Port Moresby’s Market systems.

The mobile money and bill pay system; known as MiCash- acts as a Mobile Wallet operating on mobile phones. Registered market vendors can deposit cash into their mobile wallets with a mobile money agent, then each day the vendor can pay the daily market user fee through the bill pay system linked to their mobile wallets.

The registration is comprised of four stations; the first three take down the vendors personal information, phone number, name, etc (or if they do not have phones they can purchase discounted ones from our stalls) their photos are taken and their market vendor ID cards printed and collected. The forth station is where the vendors register for their mobile wallets and open their bank accounts.

The mobile system allows for a more transparent and efficient management of fees collected as they are directly transferred to NCDC allowing not only a reduction in extortion of vendors but the ability for all market revenue to be completely traceable and reinvested back into market maintenance.

Many of the issues identified in the marketplaces are relating to violence against women be that through extortion, theft or physical/verbal abuse however economic empowerment can be a driving force to alleviate the violence which permeates the markets. A bill pay system that minimises the cash circulating in the market has the potential to not only reduce fear and crime, but also to empower women and girls economically by increasing savings opportunities and removing the risks of theft.

In its first day today UN Women and NCDC registered and printed 85 vendor ID’s . Registration for vendors is open at Gerehu from 10am to 3pm.

Hope to see you there!

 Many Thanks
