“Children” – a song inspired by Emmanuel’s observations of poverty in the settlement he resides in outside Port Moresby – originally caught the judging panel’s attention narrowly missing out on September the 1st this year, when Radio Australia announced the winner of Pacific Break 2009 as Devande with their song about unrequited love, “Everything”.

Fast forward five weeks, and today Radio Australia is announcing that the winner of Pacific Break 2009 is no longer Devande but Emmanuel Mailau with “Children”.

Brendon Telfer, Executive Producer at Radio Australia explains: “Unfortunately last week we discovered that the

winning song, “Everything”, is written and recorded by the well-known Solomon Islands group, ’One-tox’. The name ‘Devande’ was originally provided on the entry form and is actually the name of the lead singer. “

Radio Australia’s Pacific Break – the search for the best original, unsigned musical talent of the Pacific – started in 2008 and is currently in its second year of operation. The rules state that all entrants cannot be in an arrangement with a music publisher; unfortunately ‘One-tox’ is in such a relationship.

Now in its second year, Pacific Break continues to grow, spanning five time zones and 5 months. It is well supported in its search for Pacific musical talent by Vanuatu’s annual pan-Pacific music festival, Fest’napuan, providing the winning artist(s) a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase their musical talents, and play live in front of thousands at the event.

“The whole premise of Pacific Break is to provide original, unsigned Pacific musicians with the chance to be heard, and

in this case, the regrettable miscommunication led to the announcement of the winning song coming from a band that is already well on their way to success,” continued Telfer.

Chief Executive Officer of Radio Australia, Hanh Tran said, “We at Radio Australia love the song “Everything” and wish the band One-tox all the best for their future endeavours. However, in the spirit of the Pacific Break competition, we could not simply ignore the fact that One-tox was already a well-known and produced act. The entire philosophy of Pacific Break is to provide original and unsigned Pacific artists with an opportunity.”
